Sincere congratulations go out to Burchells lawyer Victor Ryan as the recipient of this year's Zöe Odei Young Lawyer Award!
The CBA's Nova Scotia branch awards this honour each year to a young lawyer who exemplifies community-mindedness, has given back to the legal profession, and has demonstrated a commitment to serving their community. It awards a young lawyer's distinguished or exceptional service to the Canadian Bar Association, the community or charitable causes.
Victor has given back to the legal profession in many ways. He is a member of the CBA-NS Communications and Public Relations Committee, offering his expertise (gathered while completing his Bachelor of Journalism degree) to the content of the branch's magazine, Nova Voce. Victor is a key member of the Organizing Committee of the CBA National Aboriginal Law Conference, has presented at CBA-NS Section events, and the 2019 Annual Conference. He is also a long-time volunteer - preparing and serving food - at the Brunswick Street Mission. Victor was a member of the East Coast Prison Justice Society’s human rights monitoring project, where he met with inmates and tracked systemic issues with inmate treatment.
As if his time were not already accounted for, Victor also serves on the National Board of Directors for It Gets Better Canada, a nonprofit organization working to uplift, empower and connect LGBTQ+ youth across the country.
A well-earned recognition for an energetic, community-focused lawyer. Victor, we are lucky to have you!
