About BWB LLP and our Articling Program:

Burchell Wickwire Bryson LLP (BWB) is a full-service law firm located in downtown Halifax, with more than 40 lawyers. The firm takes great pride in its history, with more than 100 years of providing top quality legal services and client satisfaction, the result of which is a long list of loyal clients and dedicated professionals.

Life at BWB is fast-paced and collegial.  We work together to help one another grow as professionals, focusing on growing and excelling in private practice.  BWB is known for its great workplace culture. We enjoy our work, and respect and enjoy our colleagues at the firm.

BWB is committed to building a diverse and inclusive work environment. We believe that diversity, equity and inclusion is essential for building a better workplace and community and enhances the legal services we provide to our clients.

BWB has active practices in corporate & commercial transactions, civil litigation, insurance defence litigation, family law, criminal law and labour & employment. Uniquely, we also have the largest and one of the longest-standing Indigenous Peoples law practices in Atlantic Canada.  Our Indigenous Peoples practice group represents clients in all areas of Indigenous Peoples law, including First Nations’ governance, litigation, land claims, First Nations’ Economic Development, and aboriginal entrepreneurship.

Aside from working hard in the office, our lawyers also get involved in the city and the profession, offering their time on charities, in the arts, and with the activities of the Canadian Bar Association and the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society. BWB is, and works to continue being, part of the fabric of our community.

As an articled clerk at BWB, you will obtain an in-depth and well-rounded experience within all firm practice areas.  We maintain a flexible program, tailoring the experience to the interests of both clerks and lawyers, in order to avoid the missed opportunities sometimes inherent in a rigid rotation model. Clerks are paired with mentoring lawyers to ensure the articling year offers access to all aspects of the practice of law. Mentors also are advocates for our clerks, ensuring they get rewarding work and assisting with workload management.

We augment our articled clerks' training with in-house seminars designed to highlight specific legal issues or developing trends. We provide not only our articled clerks but all of our lawyers opportunities for ongoing professional development and sharing of expertise within the office.

With experience comes greater autonomy. As the articling year develops, we encourage our lawyers to find opportunities for clerks to work directly with clients. We hire clerks with the intention of them being future associates. Many of our lawyers currently work with clients who they started working with as clerks.

BWB respects the significant burden faced by articled clerks in participating in and completing all work assignments associated with the bar admission course.  We do what can to ease the stress accompanying this aspect of bar admission. Above all, we recognize our articled clerks' success as our success.

If you feel that private practice and BWB may be the right fit for you, we welcome your application.

Applicants from equity-deserving groups are welcomed to self-identify throughout our application process. Applicants have the right to request accommodation during our recruitment process. Applicants selected for an interview who require accommodation are encouraged to speak with a member of our team to discuss how we can support them through the process.
