We are extremely pleased to congratulate our (now former) partner Ann Smith on her appointment to bench of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, effective October 20, 2016.
In her time with Burchells, Justice Smith was a dedicated adviser and advocate for clients on a variety of matters, ranging from academic appeals to human rights issues to complex civil litigation. An accomplished courtroom lawyer, she appeared before superior courts, appellate courts, and a variety of administrative tribunals across Atlantic Canada, where she has earned the respect of both bench and bar. She also has long been a mentor to young lawyers both inside and outside Burchells, having served on the firm's articling committee, taught civil procedure at Dalhousie University, and organized annual mock trials involving clerks and students from Burchells and other downtown law firms.
Born and raised in Halifax, Justice Smith is a 1990 graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School and was admitted to the Nova Scotia Bar in 1991. In December 2012 she was appointed a member of the Queen’s Counsel.
Ann Smith's integrity, knowledge, and deep commitment to justice will make her a great judge. Congratulations, Ann!
Her Ladyship will preside at Halifax.
