Burchells congratulates long-time clients the Southern Inuit of NunatuKavut as they take their first formal steps towards a modern rights agreement.
Today Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs, and Todd Russell, President of the NunatuKavut Community Council, together announced the start of discussions on recognition of Indigenous rights and self-determination for the Southern Inuit. The discussions will be wide-ranging, touching on all aspects of the community's rights, needs and interests. While only just beginning, this dialogue represents the culmination of efforts on behalf of the NunatuKavut people spanning decades, and recognition of their special position in Canada.
Burchells is proud to have participated in this historic achievement and looks forward to NunatuKavut's bright, self-governed future.
