About Ian

Ian Joyce is a partner, a member of the firm’s three-person management team, and a criminal and civil litigation lawyer.

Ian has a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) degree (2004) from Dalhousie University and a Juris Doctor degree (2007) from Dalhousie University’s Schulich School of Law.  He was called to the Nova Scotia bar in 2008.  Ian has been vigorously advocating for and navigating clients through complex problems for sixteen years.  He has a reputation for his microscopic attention to detail, communication skills, zealous approach to cross-examination, and making each client feel like his only client.

Ian is at his core a trial lawyer.  In his criminal practice, Ian represents individuals, corporations, and institutions charged with criminal, quasi-criminal, and regulatory offences.  He also provides legal advice and strategy planning services to/for police and other investigative agencies.  Ian routinely represents professionals (doctors, engineers, realtors, etc.) who are facing disciplinary proceedings.  On the civil side, he represents plaintiffs and defendants dealing with a variety of complicated problems.  He has appeared and argued before all levels of Court in Nova Scotia (Court of Appeal, Supreme Court and Provincial Court), before numerous commissions and tribunals, and before Courts and other decision-makers in other provinces in Canada.

Outside of the office Ian enjoys boating, waterskiing, and hosting regular (very well attended) dinner parties.  Watch for Ian in print media as he has been a regular contributor and legal columnist in a number of publications.

Ian is a member of the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society and the Canada Bar Association.
